Full Fibre vs Standard Broadband — Which is Better for Business?

Full fibre FTTP vs standard FTTC broadband compared for UK businesses. Speed, reliability, cost and why full fibre is the only sensible choice for new business connections.

The Technical Difference

Standard broadband (FTTC — Fibre to the Cabinet) runs fibre from the telephone exchange to the green cabinet on your street. From the cabinet to your premises, it uses old copper telephone wire. That copper section is the bottleneck — limiting speeds, increasing latency and degrading performance over distance.

Full fibre broadband (FTTP — Fibre to the Premises) eliminates the copper entirely. Glass fibre cable runs all the way from the exchange directly to your building. No copper, no bottleneck, no distance-dependent speed reduction.

Speed Comparison

Standard FTTC broadband: Download speeds typically 36–80Mbps in practice (up to 80Mbps advertised). Upload typically 10–20Mbps. Performance degrades with distance from the cabinet.

Full fibre FTTP broadband: Download speeds up to 1,000Mbps (1Gbps). Upload speeds up to 1,000Mbps symmetric. Performance is consistent regardless of distance from the exchange.

Reliability Comparison

Copper degrades. Water ingress, oxidation, physical damage from groundworks — all affect copper-based connections and cause faults. Glass fibre doesn't corrode, doesn't degrade over time and is significantly more resilient than copper. FTTP connections have fewer faults and faster restoration when faults do occur.

Why Full Fibre is the Only Sensible Choice for New Business Connections

FTTC broadband is being phased out as part of BT's Openreach full fibre rollout. Many exchanges are already on migration paths. If you're signing a 12 or 24-month business broadband contract today, signing for FTTC broadband makes no strategic sense — full fibre is available at most commercial addresses, provides far superior performance and costs a comparable monthly rate.

Telexico provides full fibre (FTTP) business broadband from £29.99/month. We don't sell FTTC broadband for new connections — it's the wrong product for 2025 and beyond.

Full fibre is now available at most UK commercial addresses. Use the postcode checker on our fibre broadband page to confirm availability at your specific premises.

If you're on standard FTTC broadband (80Mbps), full fibre is typically 10–12× faster in download speed and 50× faster in upload speed. The upload improvement is often the bigger game-changer for businesses using cloud software.

Not necessarily — Telexico can overlap the installation of full fibre with your existing connection. We install and test the new circuit before you cancel the old one, ensuring zero downtime during the switch.

Yes — all Telexico full fibre business broadband plans include a dedicated static IP at no extra charge.
